Plans for Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration in Droitwich take step forward

Droitwich Editorial 18th Jun, 2023   0

PLANS for Droitwich’s first-ever Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration took a step forward at Monday’s town council community and amenities meeting as a sub-group was formed to help organise the event.

Events are held on January 27 each year to remember the atrocity and the 6million Jews murdered at the hands of the Nazis as well as remembering the genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.

Coun Val Humphries, who has been organising the commemoration, has suggested holding the event the day before, Friday, January 26, so members of the Jewish community aren’t omitted.

Coun Humphries said the sub-group would welcome any input from the local community on what the service would look like.

She said she would make a proposal for a small budget for the event to be considered by the town council at a later date.

Organisers are also searching for an accessible venue capable of hosting around 100 people on the day.

Droitwich is currently one of the few areas locally not to hold a commemoration to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

Worcester, Bromsgrove and Redditch hold events every year and invite local schoolchildren and other members of the community to get involved.

A motion was put forward for a commemoration in Droitwich at January’s town council meeting by former town councillor Alan Humphries.
