Plenty pick up sticks at Droitwich Hockeyfest

JUST weeks after Team GB’s women won gold in the Olympics, Droitwich Hockey Club held its annual event to find the stick stars of the future.

Despite the bad weather, more than 100 people went along to Hockeyfest, which was backed by England Hockey and aimed at promoting the sport.

The club also unveiled its new kit, sponsored by Akuma, and there were ‘have a go’ sessions for juniors and adults. They proved very popular with ten new people going along.

Eddie Jones, returning to hockey after playing at school, said he liked the the event as it enabled him to participate in the sport in a fun and entertaining way after not playing it for 25 years.

Catherine Baskerville added she wanted to return to the game for fun because she had more free time and the club was able to offer hockey to a standard for all to enjoy.

Away from the pitch, there are many other aspects of the club people can get involved in.

Droitwich Spa Hockey Club has been in a transitional phase over the last two years and, thanks to a focused development plan, now has a state of the art pitch and improved clubhouse facilities. It has also been able to develop its junior and adult hockey and ensured it has kept its membership affordable.

Droitwich Hockey Club was a founder member of the King George V Sports and Community Interest company which has a mission to further develop the existing clubhouse into one which could benefit many other sports and community groups in the town.

Anyone else inspired by the Olympics is welcome to go to the club and try out the sport which members say provides health and development opportunities, along with lasting friendships.

Training takes place between 6.30pm and 7.30pm on Wednesday evenings for juniors and from 7.30pm to 9.30pm for adults.
