Popular Judo Club scoops £5k national award to help members reach full potential

A POPULAR Judo Club will be able to upgrade its equipment meaning more members will be able to reach their full potential after scooping a £5,000 national award.

Kodokan Judo Club will buy top of the range mats for its 40 members, who start from age five, after being awarded the money by financial services company OneFamily as part of its Community Awards.

The club, which trains twice a week at Cockshute Hill Scout Hut, will also buy 25 portable mats so the group can show off their skills at community events.

Kodokan will also be hoping to boost its numbers when it attends the St Richard’s Festival on May 6 to offer free taster sessions.

Chris Turner, club coach and chairperson at Kodokan Judo Club, said: “This money will make a huge difference to our club and our training.

“Experienced members will be able to challenge themselves with advanced technical moves as the new mats provide increased protection, and our beginners should feel more confident starting off with a safer landing.

“Campaigning for votes was a real community effort, so it’s lovely to see that our hard work succeeded.

“We can’t thank everyone who supported us enough.”

The awards are part of the OneFamily Foundation and were created to give OneFamily customers the opportunity to support projects in their area that matter to them and their families.

Guy French, corporate and customer strategy director at OneFamily, said: “Judo is a sport for all ages and abilities, and Kodokan Judo Club Droitwich really proves this.

“The club brings people of all walks of life together on a weekly basis, building a real community spirit.”
