Proposed Droitwich Community Speed watch group to put brakes on drivers

Droitwich Editorial 23rd Jun, 2022   0

DROITWICH is one step closer to getting a Community Speed Watch programme for Celvestune Way to put the brakes on drivers who flout the law.

Droitwich Spa Town Council agreed to a proposal for a mandate to request to implement the programme on Monday evening.

The minimum number of six active volunteers who want to participate and register for the programme had been received.

Nearby speed monitoring sites have been proposed and the mandate will allow police to register the scheme and assess the suggested monitoring sites for safety and suitability.

The police will also be able to begin the induction process for volunteers wishing to take part in the scheme.

Coun Richard Morris, who made the proposal to the council, said residents had told him of near misses and speeding issues by Copcut Park, on the corner leading to Copcut Court where many elderly people cross the road.

It was a similar situation at the bottom of Bower Hill and by the Dale and Chawson Pleck.

Coun Morris said: “The Chawson Area Residents Association have this volunteer group as one of its first aims and there are many volunteers to support it.

“I am really pleased the residents’ group are on board with the Community Speed Watch Scheme and I think it would be great to bring it into Droitwich Spa.”

Community Speed Watch volunteers meet at specified safe locations in groups of three to monitor the speed of passing vehicles using a handheld speed detection device.

They then record the details of vehicles that are speeding on a log sheet, including their make, model and registration number and the recorded speed.

The scheme aims to encourage drivers to reduce speed in areas of concern and educate people about the dangers of speeding.
