Rallying call to residents to help plan special Droitwich Charter Day

A PUBLIC meeting will be hosted by Droitwich Mayor Coun Bob Brookes to discuss a special celebration to mark the 800th anniversary of the town receiving its Royal Charter.

The event at 7pm a week on Monday (February 2) in the Town Council Chamber, Victoria Square, will see plans mooted for the special Charter Day which will possibly be held on July 4.

The date was chosen as it falls towards the end of the two-week Droitwich Summer Festival – that runs from June 20 to July 5.

As well as the national and worldwide celebrations of the Magna Carta and its role in the development of democracy, a lot of people are unaware that in 1215, King John also granted Droitwich the right to manufacture salt from the brine stream that is still underneath the town.

That momentous occasion helped shape Droitwich as a Spa town.

Coun Brookes said: “Droitwich is a town literally built on salt and I think this is too good an opportunity to miss.

“I am proposing to form a Community Interest group to bring local people and organisations together to make it happen.

“Anyone who lives in Droitwich, has a business here, or would just like to help is welcome to come and tell us how they would like to contribute.”

Invitations are being sent out to organisations and individuals who have been involved with helping with previous town events.

Help will be needed with a variety of aspects, from setting up web pages and administration to planning and running the event itself.

Those wanting to assist can email the mayor at [email protected] or go to the meeting.
