Rashwood Care Home residents pay tribute to Droitwich Salt King with John Corbett scarecrow

RESIDENTS and staff at Rashwood Care Home in Droitwich have been getting creative to pay tribute to local industrialist and philanthropist John Corbett, writes Matthew Reid.

They have constructed a scarecrow in his image as part of the Elizabeth Finn Homes’ inter-home Scarecrow Challenge.

Mr Corbett – locally referred to as the Salt King – was a figurehead of the salt industry during the Victorian period and is recognised for revolutionising salt production. His works were among the largest in Europe.

Beyond salt, Mr Corbett was heralded for his philanthropy and was credited with establishing the Corbett Hospital and other charitable projects.

The Rashwood property is deeply ingrained in local history and, like Corbett, has long been at the heart of the Droitwich community.

Residents at Rashwood felt Corbett offered fitting inspiration for their scarecrow and wanted to celebrate local history by paying tribute to the prominent figure.

Plenty of fun was had and stories shared as the straw figure was brought into being with a variety of materials – the care home said the fitting autumnal activity was a wonderful collaboration which celebrated local heritage.

Rashwood Care Home is rated Good by the CQC and welcomes anyone who might want to stop by for a cup of tea and a chat and, of course, to admire John Corbett, who leisurely resides in the home’s reception area.
