Rescue skills on show at Webbs in Wychbold

A TEAM from Ross-on-Wye and one from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) will be heading into the final of a national rescue competition.

The result came after six HWFRS teams and fire crews from West Midlands, Hampshire, South Wales and Avon took part in a rescue challenge at Webbs garden centre in Wychbold.

The event was held on Saturday (June 6) as part of the national United Kingdom Rescue Organisation (UKRO) Challenge 2015.

The Ross-on-Wye team won the Road Traffic Collision Challenge and a mixed HWFRS team consisting of Jayne Collins and Jim Clarke won the Trauma Challenge.

They will now go through to the national UKRO Challenge 2015, which will take place at the Fire Service College in Gloucestershire on July 30 and August 2.

The Trauma Challenge tested the response of crews facing one of a selection of trauma incidents, including a motorcycle crash and a knife incident. Faced with the scenario, crews were expected to quickly identify and treat the injuries found.

The Road Traffic Collision Challenge gave each crew 20 minutes to safely cut free casualties trapped in a simulated road crash.

During the challenges, the crews were independently assessed under the scrutiny of experienced UKRO officials in order to determine the winners of each category.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer John Hodges awarded the winners with their trophies, congratulated participants and wished the regional winners success on the national stage.

“The challenges are an excellent opportunity for the crews to improve and build upon their skills and ensure that we deliver an optimum service to the communities we serve.”

Ed Webb, Chairman of Webbs said it was a wonderful family event to showcase the skills and bravery of the Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service.

As well as the challenges, the public also enjoyed having a look around the fire engine and seeing trauma demonstrations, carried out by the HWFRS Community Safety team.
