DROITWICH residents are being urged to have their say on where a memorial bench for all those who lost their lives to Covid and to highlight the hard work of key workers should be sited in the town.
The proposal for a memorial was put forward by Coun Alan Humphries at the last Droitwich Town Council meeting.
Presenting his motion, Coun Humphries spoke of the devastation and horror Covid released on the world, the scenes in other countries and in our own hospitals ‘as people died and others fought to save them, often at the cost of their own lives and driven to the point of exhaustion’.
He added: “All of us have been touched in some way by this horrible disease if not by losing a family member or a friend or knowing someone who got it most probably by getting it ourselves.
“The people we lost, the sacrifices others made should never be forgotten and a fitting memorial in our wonderful town will serve to remind future generations of that and to be an appropriate legacy for that loss and sacrifice’.”
Suggestions were put forward for what form the memorial could take and it was agreed a public bench with a befitting inscription would be the best.
Coun RP Hopkins expressed it was important for residents to decide where they would like the memorial bench to be located.
Three locations have been shortlisted – the Spring Meadow open space, Copcut Park or in the front garden outside St Richard’s House.
People can email [email protected] or call 01905 774258 to place their vote when the next town council meeting will take place.
The council will then discuss options for suitable bench styles.
