Residents urged to join Rock Choir to help them get fit

RESIDENTS are being encouraged to ditch the gym in favour of singing their way to their ideal weight this New Year.

Rock Choirs in Droitwich, Malvern and Worcester are inviting new members to join their weekly club and try a different way of getting fit in 2015.

A 90-minute session can burn more than 200 calories by getting those taking part to not only exercise their lungs but also spend time on their feet learning dance moves.

Studies have shown singing in a groups helps to boost immune systems, reduces stress levels, improves on mental wellbeing and even helps enhance concentration and memory and builds confidence.

Researchers have found singing promotes positive feelings which counteract ones of stress or anxiety, helping distract people from internal negative thoughts and feelings.

Singing in a choir also encourages teamwork and a sense of reaching a shared goal as well as helping people make new friends.

Rock Choir is the UK’s largest contemporary choir with more than 17,000 members in over 300 locations.

There are no auditions and no requirements for participants to read music or have any previous singing experience.

Rock Choir members get to take part in a number of performances throughout the year and many of them help raise money for charity.

Helen Jones, a Rock Choir leader who runs session in Droitwich, Malvern and Worcester, said she knows first-hand how much singing as part of the choir has helped her members.

She added: “It’s amazing to see how much the members benefit from taking part in Rock Choir on a weekly basis.

“I’ve seen confidences grow and friendships develop and it’s awesome to see, especially when they have taken part in a performance.”
