Residents warned to be aware of scammers after incident in Worcester

RESIDENTS are being warned to be on their guard against scam callers and courier fraud deception after an incident in Worcester.

Between 2pm and 6.30pm on Monday a man received a call on his landline from a person saying they were a police sergeant from the fraud squad based in London.

The fraudster gave the names of Sgt Clarke and a Sgt Wiggins and told the victim he could check their identity with West Mercia Police.

The victim was convinced to withdraw monies from his bank account and agreed for a courier to collect the money using an agreed password.

The ‘courier’ was an Asian man, aged in his early 20s, and of slim build. He was around 5ft 5ins to 5ft 6ins tall and was smartly dressed.

Following the incident residents are reminded that police officers and banks would never ask for account details or PINs over the phone.

Police officers and banks would also never visit houses to collect cards or property and would never ask for money to be transferred to a secure account.

Anyone who experiences calls like this should hang up immediately and ring 101 from another phone or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Those who have elderly friends or relatives who may be vulnerable to this scam should let them know and make them aware of the situation.
