Seventy-year-old collectable road sign found in Droitwich

A SEVENTY-year-old ‘Road Works Ahead’ sign was found on the side of the road by the Droitwich Spa Litter Squad (DSLS).

The sign – from Abbotts Briks Ltd in London – reportedly dates back to the 50s and is now a highly sought collector’s item.

However, the new find has caused a bittersweet feeling amongst the litter pickers.

The road sign is just one out of over a hundred the group has picked up over the past three years – many they claim cannot be moved and disposed of as it would be classed as theft.

A monumental amount of signs and metal collected from one of the group’s litter picks. s

Clive Shearman, DSLS founder, said that fast food rubbish is easily removed but road signs are much harder.

“As soon as one is gone, another replaces it – it is time-consuming and annoying for our litter pickers, who are all volunteers.

“Not all the sign companies are irresponsible, and many now use Apps to track their items we have good relations with both Highways and Wychavon who get these items collected or removed.

“Our argument – and it is a National problem – is why is it continually happening and why are the irresponsible not prosecuted or at least not given any future contracts.”
