Singing group for people with breathing problems to meet at weekly health meetings

A SINGING group for people with breathing problems is meeting weekly to try to improve members’ health through song.

Sing4Breath was formed in 2014 for those living with COPD and attending the local pulmonary rehabilitation programme.

COPD or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is the name for a group of lung diseases which cause breathing difficulties.

The choir, with members from across Worcestershire, is giving local COPD sufferers the chance to do something they never thought they would be able to do.

Sing4Breath is based at The Old Elizabethan’s Cricket Club, Droitwich Road, Worcester, and meets every Thursday during term-time between 10am and 11.30pm.

One member Patricia said: “Having had breathing problems for many years, I was almost afraid to even try to sing so never did, apart from at school or at home privately.

“When I joined Sing4Breath two years ago I was surprised that I could actually sing in tune.”

Members attribute positive changes in their health to singing in the choir.

The keen choristers are led in exercises and techniques to improve their breathing patterns as well as practising songs.

Members have improved their breathlessness, quality of breathing and general health as a result of the sessions.

Patricia said: “I can actually hold the notes definitely longer than I could two years ago.

“Our choir leader teaches us ways of elongating our breath to our individual maximum by ‘measuring’ and ‘controlling out’ our breath.

“We also learn about where our breath is supported and use our stomach muscles.”

Many have also said the group helped them gain self confidence and reduce feelings of depression, isolation and loneliness.

Choir member Sheila said: “Joining the Sing4Breath choir has been one of the best things I have ever done.”

The sociable singers also enjoy meeting new people in an environment free of scrutiny.

Patricia said: “We know that we aren’t being judged, that we can sit or stand or have a drink or cough without being quizzed – totally without anyone taking notice or commenting.”

Members with or without breathing issues will be given a warm welcome.
