MEMBERS of the Droitwich-based SPA-rkles WI have expressed their dismay after the knitted items they yarn bombed Vines Park with were collected up and binned.
Members of the branch were up at 6am on Saturday to adorn the park with realms of knitting, all canal-related, as part of the Salt Fest celebrations.
And a visit to the park on Monday showed the knitting was still in tact and the ladies planned to take it down on Wednesday (September 17) so they could donate the wool and woolly decorations to local schools to inspire then to be creative. Larger sections of wool were going to be knitted together to form blankets and scarves for the homeless.
But on Wednesday WI women were told by a Wychavon District Council worker that the knitting had been found stuffed in the bin.
SPA-rkles President Helen Starks said: “We are gutted because not only was this a labour of love, and lots of hard work, we wanted this to continue to benefit the local community.
“We were so delighted with the respect that had been shown to the yarn-bombing as it had survived the weekend – but this has really disappointed us and now the park looks quite bare!”
