Spatans can still have say on Sainsbury's lights

SPA residents have until Thursday (May 22) to have their say on the controversial canapé lights on the Worcester Road’s Sainsbury’s garage.

It comes after a retrospective planning application was submitted by the company to Wychavon District Council (WDC) last week.

Coun Ken Jennings said during the planning application process, before the garage had been built last year, many people had expressed concerns about the site.

So, to protect the residents’ amenities, WDC placed a number of conditions on the garages application. This included the height of the canapé, the lighting, the noise and the opening hours, from 7am until 11pm.

Sainsbury’s then put in an amended planning application for the height of the canopy which was determined by the planning officer, at the time, as a minor change and was approved, much to the objections and disdain of residents.

Whilst the application stated the garage had to close at 11pm it did not specify when the lights had to turn off, allowing, residents claimed, Sainsbury’s to keep them lit 24-hours-a-day.

Those living nearby said the three bright signs on the sides and front of canopy then became a problem as they were at the same level as the surrounding properties’ bedroom windows.

Resident David Star said: “The lights on the side of the garage are obscured from the view of vehicles driving up and down the main road.

“The only people who can see them are the people in the houses next to the site.

“One can only assume the young lady officer who put this through was either blind or she had never been to the site.”

A council spokesperson said it was currently in discussion with the supermarket to try and find an agreeable way forward which suited everybody involved.

David Hammond, Wychavon’s housing and planning services manager, said: “The current lighting they have varies to the light plan in their original planning application so they have applied for us to consider the change.”

Those wanting to view the application and have their say can visit and use the application number 00893.
