Speeding crackdown behind Droitwich roads 'mystery markings'

A DROITWICH councillor has moved to clear up confusion surrounding mysterious markings on a busy Spa road where people claimed cars had regularly come off the road and crashed through a garden fence.

‘Baffled’ residents on Primsland Way woke up earlier this week to find the white lines had been painted down the middle of the road.

The road has seen an increased speeding issue develop sparking concerns from those living nearby.

Speculation quickly grew on social media the new markings could be part of a new 20mph restriction for the road.

However, Coun Bob Brookes promptly dispelled these rumours and a Worcestershire County Council spokesperson confirmed the works were to address speeding concerns and were not related to a 20mph speed limit.

The spokesperson added: “We will continue to work closely with the local county councillors and hope these additional measures will have a positive impact on speed reduction.”

Several residents had their say on the new measures on Facebook.

One said: “The only effect of this will be to confuse motorists.

“I drive over 70,000 miles a year in my job and those markings are some of the most ridiculous I have seen.”

Calls have also been made for a zebra crossing to be introduced, while others said if the council wanted narrower roads, they could have installed a cycle lane.

Coun Brookes told the Standard: “We are looking at the possibility of introducing a vehicle-activated sign, and there will be other measures reviewed including the potential for a crossing as the situation develops – we’ll do what we can to help.”

Others looked at the changes more favourably, with one of the road’s residents saying she had seen very near misses involving schoolchildren due to people driving up to 60mph.

Several people claimed in the last month two cars had come off the road due to speeding and had gone through a garden fence.

Those living nearby said, while looking out of their kitchen windows, they had noticed motorists were already slowing down as they drove between the narrower lines.
