A POPULAR Droitwich woman who turned 100 years old on New Year’s Day has put the secret to her long life down to a ‘good diet and the occasional sherry’.

Beryl Reynolds, a resident at Dorset House Care Home, celebrated her birthday in style with a special gathering of family, friends, residents and staff where she enjoyed an afternoon tea with champagne.

Born in Wotton-Under-Edge, Gloucestershire in 1918, Beryl moved to Thornbury, near Bristol, in 1938 to become a teaching assistant where she met her future husband Norman.

The pair married in 1942.

Beryl and Norman then moved to Bristol where they enjoyed more than 60 years of marriage until Norman died in 2005 aged 89.

A year later Beryl moved up to Droitwich Spa to be near family.

She lived independently in the town until 2012 before moving into Dorset House Care Home.

With many great memories from her long life, Beryl treasures her marriage to Norman and their wedding day in 1942 which she describes as the most ‘memorable day in her life’.

Beryl’s secret for a long life is a ‘good, sensible diet and the occasional Sherry’ and when asked what she was most looking forward to she said ‘being 101!’.

Gence Mekkunnel, Dorset House home manager, said: “Beryl is a model resident, she always gets involved in home events, loves our flower-arranging and garden based activities and is great fun to chat to.

“Age is certainly no barrier for Beryl, she enjoys a great life here and is very popular with other residents and staff.”
