Summer reading challenge off to flying start

Droitwich Editorial 13th Aug, 2023   0

OVER 3,000 youngsters have already signed up for Worcestershire County Council’s Summer Reading Challenge – surpassing last year’s total by 750.

The challenge runs throughout the summer and children still wishing to take part are encouraged to get involved now before the challenge wraps up on September 16.

Children aged 4-11 can visit their local library to get involved in the challenge, with this years theme centred around the power of play, sports, games, and physical activity.

Coun Marcus Hart, cabinet member with responsibility for communities at Worcestershire County Council said: “It’s been a fabulous start to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.

“As a parent myself, I can really appreciate the need for children to read for pleasure over the summer holidays, building reading skills and confidence and helping to prevent the ‘dip’ in reading skills while they are out of school.

“There’s still plenty of time to sign up.

“Our libraries look forward to helping your children choose their books and talk face-to-face with library staff about their reading achievements.”

The challenge encourages children to keep their minds and bodies active over the summer break.

The Summer Reading Challenge features cards from the Youth Sport Trust and a themed book collection.

By participating in the challenge, the county council hope young people will take the opportunity to explore new reading material, develop skills, and discover new interests.
