SYNCHRONISED swimming dazzled Droitwich at the weekend as the local Lido celebrates its 90th birthday.
Nearly 100 people flocked to the pool, where The Friends of Droitwich Spa Lido (FODSL) had organised an evening of nostalgic entertainment and published a memory book to tell the story of swimming across the decades.
The crowds were entertained by ‘Almost Synchro’ a synchronized swimming group from Bristol. The 15 strong team of women performed a sparkling watery display, capturing the yesteryear of lido tradition.
Following their performance they invited keen swimmers into the pool to have a go at the art of swimming in formation.
The organisers have spent much of this year creating and publishing a memory book to document the story of The Lido since it opened in 1935 and to celebrate many years of swimming in the town.
The book went on sale for the first time on Saturday and features personal stories of The Lido past and present and historic photos of the pool. Copies of the book are available from The Lido kiosk for £5
The event was opened by FODSL’s Chair Suzi Wood. Also there were the group’s original chair, Sheila Preston, the mayor of Droitwich councillor Christine Bowman, mayor’s Consort, Coun Eric Bowman, Coun Richard Morris and Coun Dan Birch.
The next FODSL event will be an open air cinema performance of Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of The Black Pearl on Saturday, August 16.
