Tales of Droitwich Spa to be shared with hundreds of new homeowners in town

A BOOK featuring scores of fascinating stories about a Worcestershire town’s history will soon be on the shelves of 200 homeowners buying properties via local estate agency Nicol & Co.

Along with every set of keys, Nicol & Co is also handing over ‘welcome hampers’ including a copy of the recently published book Ooh Aah Droitwich Spa.

The book by local author and journalist Adrian Caffery includes tales of how Droitwich Spa boasts everything from brine springs saltier than the Dead Sea to some of the UK’s best public toilets.

Other claims to the town’s fame in the book include how it once made the flames for the Batmobile, started a vacuum cleaner revolution and helped lay the foundations for modern America.

Matt Nicol, managing director of Nicol & Co, was among the first to pick up a copy of Ooh Aah Droitwich Spa and quickly saw its potential to be part of his company’s ‘welcome hamper’ for homebuyers.

Mr Nicol, who also chairs the Droitwich Spa Place Board, a voluntary body of people with a passion for the town, said: “This is a brilliant book that deserves to be read cover to cover.

“I received a copy before Christmas and was so impressed.

“It contains so much for Droitwich Spa people to be proud of, and a lot of stories most of us would never would have known.”

Ooh Aah Droitwich Spa author Adrian Caffery is a local journalist who started his career on the Droitwich Spa Advertiser and now works on the Birmingham Mail.

Mr Caffery said: “Matt is on a mission to make Droitwich even better than it already is, and to make townsfolk burst with pride. I’m delighted the book is now playing a small part in that.

“I hope the book gives Matt’s homebuyers a good introduction to Droitwich and encourages them to play an active role in the community.”

Readers of Ooh Aah Droitwich Spa will discover all about the town’s quirkier tales, including how it hosted the world’s longest tennis rally, and its links to Shakespeare, HMS Warrior, The Archers and The Beatles.
