Taste of success for Droitwich pub with plans for popular pies to go national

STAFF at a popular Droitwich pub are serving up a slice of success after being approached by a national company to supply their homemade pies across the country.

The Gardeners Arms, on Vines Lane, has sold more than 630 pies in nearly two months, with the number steadily growing.

After catching the eye of a national chain, the popular pastries are in the beginning stages of being supplied across the country and have even been entered into the British Pie Awards 2018.

Landlord and landlady Simon and Edith Berry introduced the original two pies, the Worcester pie and Droitwich pie, after discussing the fillings with the staff, head chef Linda Marshall, manager Paul Evans and apprentice Charlie Tandy.

They hoped the pies would become as popular as the previous ‘Droitwich Sausage’, of which the pub became famous for.

Simon said: “We see it as a growth area nationally and as part of our heritage of pie-making.

“It’s all about the tourism and bringing people to the area.

“When people visit different areas they want to try food and drink from that region and that is what we were able to do with the Droitwich Sausage and what we are able to do with the pies.”

Aiming to pack in the local ingredients, the Droitwich Pie boasts pulled pork, chicken and bacon in chive cider Worcestershire Sauce gravy and the Worcester Pie offers steak cooked with Worcester Blue cheese, Worcester Friar Tuck ale, mushroom, tarragon and Worcestershire Sauce jus.

The pub’s bosses say they’re delighted at the success so far.

“Someone from a national chain tried one of the pies and said it was superb and nothing like he had ever eaten,” Simon told the Standard.

“It is a long process to supply them across the country but we have been approached and they are definitely interested.”

“We find out whether we have won an award for our pies next year.

“We never expected it to get to this point and it’s great, it has really gone viral as people say.”

The pub now offers two additional pie flavours, the Worcestershire Duck Pheasant Spiced Sausage Pie and Worcester Hocci Pot Pie.

The Worcestershire duck pheasant spiced sausage pie which includes rich game duck, pheasant, spices sausage pie cooked with apples, mushroom, onions, in a port plum herb sauce, wrapped shortcrust pastry.

The Worcester Hocci Pot Pie has braised bean soya curd cooked in sea salt brine sundried tomatoes, onions, swede, carrots, red wine pepper vegetable stock, wrapped in pastry.
