The hunt is on to find the best young chef in the Midlands - winner gets iPhone X

THE HEAT is on to find the best young chef in the Midlands, with the eventual winner getting their hands on an iPhone X and £500 worth of cookery equipment for their school.

Year 10 and 11 students across Bromsgrove and Droitwich are eligible to enter University College Birmingham’s ‘Young Chef of the Year Competition’.

The chosen chef will follow in the footsteps of reigning champion Jo Dainton, who has since gone on to do an apprenticeship she loves after winning in 2017.

Entrants must once again outline their plans for each dish – one main and one dessert.

The competition is sponsored by ‘Maple from Canada’ so both of the dishes must incorporate maple syrup in some way.

A cooking teacher at UCB, Neil Rippington, said: “It’s a great way of getting young people involved in practical cooking and building their confidence in the kitchen.

“We have seen some truly innovative dishes and great cooking techniques in previous years, so the bar has definitely been raised for this year’s competition.”

The students with the ‘best menus’ will be invited to take part in a ‘cook-off’ in front of a panel of judges at UCB on December 1.

Young chefs aged 14 to 16 can be put forward by their school, or they can enter independently.

Last year’s winner, Jo Dainton said: “Entering the UCB Young Chef of the Year was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

“I experienced working under pressure in a professional kitchen but, because the judges were really encouraging and supportive, it was as much fun as it was scary.”

All entries must be submitted online via UCB’s website by November 9.
