A DROITWICH landlord is enabling residents to toast the life of Spa comedy hero Rik Mayall and raise funds for charity at the same time.
Simon Berry from the Gardeners Arms, Vines Lane, has bought a barrel of Bombadier – an ale advertised on TV by Rik – and will be giving it away free in halves from tomorrow (Saturday) to drinkers at the pub, in return for a donation to Headway (UK).
Those behind The Rik Mayall Fanpage on Facebook created a Justgiving page to raise funds for Headway (UK) in Rik’s memory because of the head injuries he suffered in his accident in 1998.
When the barrel at the Gardeners Arms is finished the cash collected will be donated through the Justgiving page.
When Simon got in touch with The Standard, we were delighted to back and promote the idea to help raise as much money as possible for the cause.
He said: “Rik is arguably the most famous person to come from Droitwich and is remembered fondly in the town.
“His death came as a massive shock – we want people to come to the pub, remember him and raise funds for Headway UK in the process.”
The total on the ‘Flash Cash for Rik’ page is currently more than £17,000.
Anyone else wanting to donate can go to https://www.justgiving.com/flashcashforrik/ and make their pledge there.
