Two history talks will explore Droitwich Spa's timber-framed buildings

Droitwich Editorial 14th Mar, 2023   0

TWO PRESENTATIONS will be held in Droitwich Spa to explore the findings of research into two of the town’s historic buildings.

The talks held by Lyn Blewitt, who recently led the ‘Historic Droitwich: Its Streets and People’ Heritage Lottery Project, will delve into the history of 31 High Street and Priory House.

The project used documentary evidence and detailed exploration of the timber-framing to discover when they were built and put forward theories about their purposes.

The first talk focusing on 31 High Street (pictured below) will be hosted by the Droitwich Spa Civic Society at 7.30pm on Tuesday, March 21, at The Wesley Room, Droitwich Methodist Church, Worcester Road. Entry will be £5 per person.

This presentation will explore the recent restoration of this 15th century structure, delving into its new timber frame construction as well as later additions through the 16th, 17th and 18th century. Possible former occupiers and their rights to brine and salt making, a trade with a possible 2,000-year old history in Droitwich, will also be discussed.

The second talk focusing on Priory House (pictured at the top) will be hosted by the History and Archaeology Society on April 5 at 7.30pm shortly after the group’s AGM at the John Corbett Room, Droitwich Community Hall, Heritage Way. Entry will be £3 for members and £5 for non-members.

‘Priory House- An Architectural Gem’ will explore the oldest part of the building which dates to around 1400 as well as additions in the 16th and 18th century.

Both societies welcome members and visitors to their meetings.
