A UNIVERSITY of Worcester student has launched a book telling the tale of one girl’s discovery of wanting to become a police officer, with the hopes of giving a copy of the book to every local primary school in the area.

The book, ‘When We Grow Up’ was written by award winning, digital media student, Bea Moore and was launched at the university’s private degree show event at the Arches on May 11.

The story revolves around a young child named Alex, who is thinking about what she wants to do when she gets older. Knowing that she wants to do something that involves helping people in need, she is inspired to work with the police after youth engagement mascots, Peeler and Pips hold a talk at her school.

Alex later strives to show children like her that they too can help people in need and become anything they want to be.

The launch of the book was supported by university representatives, families, friends and the work of Bea’s fellow students.

Representatives of the creative industries and West Mercia Police including the office of the police and crime commissioner were also in attendance.

Bea has been awarded a £1000 bursary from Ombersley Conservation Trust for her work on the book.

She said: “Working on this project has been phenomenal. It’s been an experience that has taught me so much, and I am thankful that not only have I been able to do something of this scale so early on in my career, but that I’ve also been able to advocate such a worthwhile and meaningful cause.”

Her inspiration for the book came from ‘not being able to see representation of young black and minority ethnic people as police officers’.

She added: “Representation is so important for young people and if just one person is inspired by the book to join the police, then that is all I want.”
