A TRIO of ‘unsung heroes’ from Droitwich have been recognised for their volunteering efforts and contribution to the community.

A special awards ceremony recognised the support and involvement of Fortis Living tenants whose actions have had a positive impact on their community.

The ceremony took place at The University of Worcester Arena last week with the awards presented by BBC Midlands Today’s Giles Latcham.

Phoebe Chan, a pupil at Westacre Middle School, received the Young Volunteer of the Year award for her fund-raising efforts after finding out about the hardships faced by refugees.

The 12-year-old became involved in a number of projects to help make a difference and organised a charity fun day at a Worcester pub to help provide educational resources to child refugees in the county.

The Inspirational Award, which recognises ordinary people doing extraordinary things, was presented to Liam Jones, a 14-year-old from Droitwich who has not let his learning disability hold him back.

The youngster competes at judo special needs competitions throughout the UK and won a silver medal this year as well as achieving a blue belt.

Liam also coaches and inspires other young people to enter the sport.

Liz Jauncey is a brain injury survivor who won the Community Involvement Award.

Living in a sheltered housing scheme in Droitwich, Liz is an enthusiastic resident who has organised bowling groups, bingo nights, walking groups and arts and crafts sessions.

Chris Reed, the community development team leader at Fortis Living which organised the events, said: “As ever, the standard of entries for this year’s Fortis Awards was extremely high which always makes the decision process a difficult one.

“Each and every one of them has made such a positive difference within their communities.

“We are thrilled to announce the winners, the event truly celebrated their fantastic achievements as well as providing concrete evidence that the community spirit is well and truly alive.”

The event was sponsored by Wace Morgan Solicitors, Harris Lamb Property Consultancy, Speller Metcalfe, Saxonby Group, Persimmon Homes and Anthony Collins Solicitors.
