A VOLUNTEER with the Droitwich Community Transport Service was among three people to receive a Black Pear Tree Award from Worcestershire County Council for his commitment and dedication to the local community.
Mike Cusack received the accolade as part of the World Class Worcestershire campaign and a Black Pear Tree has also been dedicated to him within the grounds of County Hall.
Mike said he was amazed to receive an award.
“The work that I do is purely voluntary and I get enough reward meetings folks who use the transport.
“I am new to the area and following retirement I needed something to get me up and about, meeting new people and learning about the area.”
He added he looked upon the accolade as a team award because there were people taking the calls and other drivers.
“What I do is a small part of the service but a rewarding part nonetheless.”
Chairwoman of Worcestershire County Council, Coun Anne Hingley said she was delighted to present Mike with his Black Pear Tree Award.
“He clearly shows an exemplary commitment in the voluntary sector. Well done Mike and so well deserved.”
The Black Pear Tree is the symbol of Worcestershire and has been since the 1600s when Queen Elizabeth I commanded the fruit be place on Worcestershire’s flag. The awards coincided with National Volunteer Work which, put on by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, ran from June 1 to 7.
