Walking football teams sought to complete Droitwich Mike's mole-mapping machine legacy

Droitwich Editorial 2nd Apr, 2022 Updated: 2nd Apr, 2022   0

WALKING football teams are being sought for the Droitwich Against Melanoma (DAM) Trophy which will take place in memory of proud monner Mike Hull.

The cash raised from DAM Trophy 22 – on April 24 at The St Peter’s Cricket Pitch – will go towards providing a mole-mapping machine for Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital so it can be used by people right across the Midlands.

Mike lost his brave nine-year battle with melanoma on March 19.

After being told his outcome could have been different if his skin cancer had been caught earlier by a mole-mapping machine, Mike wanted to raise enough money to fund one to help others who found themselves in the same situation.

He also signed up to The Peace Project, donating his tumours so research can be carried out in the hope of finding more treatments.

Three years of fund-raising followed and the total is now up to £43,000 meaning just £12,000 is now needed to pay for the machine, its installation and licences.

In the latest events, a Zumbathon saw £1,700 generated and the football event at Stoke Prior Working Men’s Club last Friday, organised by Mike’s friend Jake Watson, raised £3,555 for the cause.

Mike’s wife Carol said: “I want to say a big thank you to everyone for everything they are doing to raise money.”

As well as the walking football, the DAM Trophy 22 event will also feature a raffle, bouncy castle, tombola, cake stall, barbecue, pony rides and tabletop sales. Some tables are still available.

The walking football tournament will be in the same format as before – teams of five (maximum seven) £10 per player, trophies and medals on the day and all proceeds will be donated to Mike’s Mole Mapping Machine fund-raiser.

The organisers want to make it bigger and better than the first tournament in 2019. Mike had already started planning the event before he passed and  it promises to be a fun filled day!

  •  Details of Mike’s funeral have also been announced – it will take place at 4pm on Thursday, April 7, at The Vale Crematorium in Fladbury, followed by a gathering at Droitwich Spa Rugby Club. The family have requested no flowers but if people want to they can donate towards Mike’s mole-mapping machine.Enquiries to: E Hill and Son Funeral Directors, Pershore, WR10 1HZ or by calling 01386 552141.
