Warning about leaving fishing equipment near canals after swan nearly choked to death in Droitwich

A SWAN rescue service is warning residents not to leave fishing equipment in the canals after yet another bird nearly choked to death in Droitwich.

John Stewart from Wychbold Swan Rescue was called out to the canal on Tuesday (August 23) after two passers-by saw the swan struggling.

With the help of Jake and his mum they got the bird out and were able to get it to the vets in time to remove fishing tackle which got caught in its throat.

Manager Jan Harrigan said this kind of incident was becoming a regular occurrence and the service was now getting a new patient everyday.

“Apparently there were children fishing in the canal last week and I’m not saying they left the tackle there but it is likely.

“So I would warn parents and residents to be careful not to leave any equipment lying around because it can be fatal for these birds.

“If we are not called we don’t know about it and we can’t help.

“If we aren’t there to help they will most certainly die and it is not a pleasant way to go.”

Jan is urging anyone who may see a swan in trouble to call them on 07786 434793.
