West Mercia Police urging residents to 'stay on the line' if they accidentally call 999

WEST Mercia Police is urging people, if they accidentally call 999 from their phone, to not panic and stay on the line and explain.

It comes as the force has received 20 accidental 999 calls so far today and operators, when that happens, need the caller to reassure them they are okay and do not need the police.

If people hang up, it can lead to the call handler becoming concerned about potential situations the caller could be in and they then have to phone them back.

People’s phones can get knocked in their pockets or children playing with parents’ phones can accidentally call 999 when the emergency services are not needed.
