A WYCHAVON councillor has been selected to carry the baton in a relay to raise awareness of mental health in Hereford next month.
Councillor Beverley Hardman will be one of 74 bearers in the Herefordshire Baton of Hope relay taking place on Thursday, October 2.
The day-long Herefordshire leg, which is one of 20 across the UK and Ireland, will shine a spotlight on the critical issues of mental health and suicide prevention.
Councillor Hardman, who is Wychavon’s executive board member for environment, has been selected in recognition of her commitment to mental health advocacy and a personal connection to the cause.
Suicide awareness and prevention is also one of Wychavon’s health and wellbeing priorities.
Speaking about her involvement, she said: “The important thing is raising awareness about suicide. I have known friends, who have died from suicide and had not realised they were contemplating this.
“My daughter had a friend at university who died from suicide, she was so young and to the outside world would have had an amazing future life.
“It’s such a shock and distressing to learn that somebody wants to hurt themselves and in how it affects the people who are left behind.
“This baton relay is all about making people aware of the advice and support available and that there are people who you can turn to and talk with.”
As an Orange Button holder, Councillor Hardman is trained to offer compassionate support and signpost individuals to mental health resources, underlying her dedication to helping those affected by suicide and bereavement.
Organisers of the Baton of Hope relay have expressed their gratitude to all participants, with preperations now well underway ahead of the event.
