Wychavon marks Ukraine war anniversary with ceremony

WYCHAVON marked four years since the outbreak of war in Ukraine at a flag-raising ceremony.

The Ukrainian flag was raised above the Civic Centre in Pershore as a show of solidarity with those impacted by the conflict with Russia.

Councillors and dignitaries were joined by some of the Ukrainian guests the district has welcomed since the conflict began.

A minute’s silence was held to remember all those who have lost their lives, been displaced or continue to suffer as a result of Russia’s illegal invasion of the country.

Coun Mark Goodge, Chairman of Wychavon, said: “By raising this flag today, we recognise the lives lost, stand firm with all those whose lives have been changed by this war, including those who have sought sanctuary locally, and reaffirm that peace, security and justice will prevail.

“We are grateful for everything everyone across Wychavon has done to show compassion, kindness and the hand of friendship to those who have fled the fighting and sought to rebuild their lives in the safety of our wonderful district.

“While we hope 2026 will be the year peace returns to Ukraine, we are also prepared to continue to stand by our Ukrainian friends for as long as it takes.

“With your help, we are currently supporting over 350 Ukrainians and have assisted more than 500 since the start of the war.

“But more are arriving all the time as the bombardment of Ukraine’s villages, towns and cities continues.”
