AS we approach the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Wychavon has reaffirmed its commitment to helping those fleeing the war.
Over the past year, over 200 people across Wychavon have opened up their homes to more than 300 people fleeing the war through the Homes for Ukraine scheme, which was launched three weeks after the start of Russia’s invasion.
Ahead of the anniversary of the invasion on February 24, the Ukrainian flag has been hoisted above the Civic Centre in Pershore as a symbol of unity with the people of Ukraine.
And residents are being encouraged to join in the national one-minute silence on Friday to mark the anniversary.
Wychavon District Council chairman Coun Alex Sinton said: “Over the last year I’ve been moved by the compassion of our community and the dedication of our staff to making sure our Ukrainian guests have the support they need to rebuild their lives.
“We all hope and pray that peace will soon be restored to Ukraine.
“But for as long as the war continues, we will continue to play our part – as I know our communities will – to support those affected by this terrible conflict.”
