Wychavon's award winning loo's are 'disgusting', 'dirty' and 'smelly' say residents

WYCHAVON District Council have moved to ease concerns after residents described the town’s award winning toilets as in a state of disarray.

Wychavon’s toilets, nine of which recently received diamond status in the Loo of the Year Awards, were described as ‘disgusting’, ‘filthy’ and ‘smelly’ as residents responded to our reporting on social media.

Residents piled in to discredit the awards, with some stating the toilets are rarely clean, with ‘overflowing’ bins, ‘soaking wet’ floors and ‘watery soap’.

One comment read: “That’s a sad reflection on the general minimum level of what constitutes an award winning loo.”

Other residents urged for a revamp of the toilets and called into question the judges, stating ‘I think we need a recount’ and ‘the judges need to go to Specsavers’.

The council responded to the less than stellar comments about the toilets, thanking residents for their feedback and confirming issues were raised with their cleaning contractor, Mitie, who are acting on the responses.

According to the council’s response, the toilets are cleaned three times a day, with additional spot checks taking place.

Tim Lewis, head of client services for Wychavon District Council, said: “While we’re confident that in general the toilets are cleaned to a high standard, we are aware they do look tired and are in need of an upgrade.

“There has been an issue around smell caused by nappy bins filling up faster than they can be emptied. Again, we are looking at solutions to this including increasing the emptying schedule and putting in extra bins.

“That’s why they are in our refurbishment plan for next year and if we can move that project forward so it can be carried out sooner then we will do so.

“We ask people to report issues to us at the time so we can act on them.”
