Wychbold Football Club to celebrate golden anniversary

Droitwich Editorial 15th May, 2015 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016   0

A FUN DAY is being held tomorrow (Saturday) to celebrate the golden anniversary of Wychbold Football Club.

The event, on Wychbold Fields and at the village hall, will celebrate that the club is still going strong, 50 years after its launch.

From midday to 4pm tomorrow, there will be a variety of activities, including a fun dog show – to which all pooches are welcome, a grand raffle, tabletop sale with plenty of bargains, a barbecue, refreshments, ice cream and face-painting, a bouncy castle and slide for youngsters.

There will also be a host of stalls at the afternoon, including tombolas, home-made cakes, guess how many balloons are in the car, a nail bar, hook-a-duck, pitch and putt and beat the goalie.

There will also be an evening event from 7.30pm till late at the Wychbold Social Club – that will feature live music from local band ‘Waiting for John’ and DJ Chubbs.

There is free admission to both events – the day and the night – but the club is asking for donations to boost its coffers and support its activities for the future when it will be, of course, vying for more league and cup success.

Wychbold FC was started back in 1964 by footballer Vic Brown – one of the club’s honorary life members, along with Darren Maycroft, Nolan Talbot, Martin Caines, John Banks, Alan Brown and Martin Winwood.

It has grown over the years and there are currently four teams operating under the club’s banner – an adult team and three junior team – under 18s, under 14s and under sevens.

There has been some great success in the five decades, including nine different league championships for the adult team and 15 cup wins in various competitions played in the Redditch, Bromsgrove and Worcester leagues, along with some runner-up titles.

And, not to be out-done, youth teams have had a league win and two cup wins, along with five runner-up positions in league football and one runner-up place in a cup final.

The current adult team manager said: “It’s an exceptionally well-run club, with a lot of people putting in a huge amount of effort over the years to keep everything going on the pitch and off it.

“You don’t enjoy the level of success we have seen here without a good group of people making a major commitment to the team.

“We’re proud that we’ve been able to attract so many good quality players locally and perhaps flattered that we have been able to attract other players from further afield, who have recognised the strengths of the team and the commitment, and wanted to be part of a well-run, enthusiastic and successful team – whether at adult or youth level.”

He said there had been a large number of unsung heroes at the club over the last 50 years, both in the past and now.

“We all hope that in another 50 years, there will be an even bigger celebration to recognise the century anniversary of the club and that we’ll see further growth and even more success for Wychbold Football Club during the next five decades.
