Wychbold villagers whose social club closed unexpectedly join forces to reopen it for the community

WYCHBOLD villagers left devastated by the sudden closure of their local social venue have joined forces to take it over and reopen it, writes Katie Bowen.

‘The Club’ shut down without warning in April, leaving a gaping hole in community life for many.

Spokesperson for the group Gary Bowen, said “The club was a major part of growing up to many residents, meaning the local community was devastated when it was suddenly taken away.

“Everyone was shocked when it closed as it was such a huge part of Wychbold life.”

The 15 villagers took up the challenge of rescuing the venue to re-unite the community and have all donated money, time and resources to bring the club back to life.

Mr Bowen added: “The community spirit has been unbelievable, and there has been huge amounts of goodwill shown.”

A total makeover has rejuvenated the interior and the newly named ‘Wychbold Sports and Social Club’ will reopen next Friday, July 28.

It is hoped the club will bring the community together amidst several new housing developments in Wychbold and attract new groups to join the venue, along with the ones which previously used it. Among them were the bingo club and successful snooker team.

Gary added: “Everyone is extremely excited for the reopening, and we are delighted after lots of hard work we can celebrate with the whole village.”

The Sports and Social Club houses a large function room which can be booked for events, a smaller lounge and snooker room. All have been redecorated.
