A TOWN teenager took part of the Vitality Hockey Women’s World Cup, writes Kirsty Card.

George Battin, 16, who has been with Droitwich Spa Hockey for more than three years, wanted to give back to his sport and was given the opportunity to be part of the Ball Patrol at the event which took place from late July into early August.

Ball Patrollers must be fit, have a good knowledge of hockey and the rules, be able to keep up with play, understand umpire decisions and have good concentration levels during matches.

Over 350 young people applied to England Hockey to be ‘ball patrollers’ (similar to ball boys and girls) but only 36 were accepted.

George was chosen after being invited to the England Hockey League Playoffs at the University of Birmingham in April for selection.

He said it was not until he saw professional hockey up close he realised how fast and skillful it was.

“I was fortunate enough to be one of only 36 chosen to be a part of it.”

George was given more training in London as British Ball Patrol training is regarded as the best worldwide.

He had 12 games from July 22 and said among his highlights were making new friends and being able to see England Women’s team beat Ireland who weer on a high from winning previous games.

George said: “This experience has increased my understanding and love of the game and makes me want to take this into my coaching, umpiring and playing at Droitwich Hockey Club in the future.”

The Droitwich Spa Hockey Club trains on Wednesdays at 6.30pm.
