Boars in last gasp win

BROMSGROVE RFC heaved sigh of relief at the final whistle after Richard Mahony with a hiding to nothing ‘free ball’ drop goal went plumb between the posts. Had he missed it didn’t matter, he would have had a bread and butter penalty to kick and looked capable all day with his place kicking.

That said, Bromsgrove can consider themselves lucky to get the 4 points and not just a losing bonus point. After a nervy start the home side began to settle in and raised their game to meet the early challenge of Bournville.

The rest of the first half Bromsgrove built on their better play to overhaul the deficit conceded from some sloppy play to go in at the half in the lead.

On the restart there seemed to be a different side on the pitch, lethargy set in and Bournville were probably the better side for much of the next 40 minutes. Eventually Bromsgrove woke from their slumber and thanks to some excellent forwards driving pressured the Bournville defence in the dying seconds of injury time and eventually the visitors conceded a penalty. With the referee playing advantage Richard Mahony lined up the drop and made sure he didn’t need to tee up for a place kick. It wasn’t a ‘Jonny Wilkinson’, it wasn’t pretty but it ensured a last gasp win for Bromsgrove.
