DROITWICH Spa CC suffered a four-wicket defeat against Bartestree and Lugwardine despite half-centuries from Harry Butler and Lincoln Kellett.

Spa posted 226 all out in 47.5 overs as Butler and Kellett scored the bulk of the runs at Bartestree Playing Fields.

However, the home side reached the required total in 36.5 overs with four wickets to spare as Edward Webb scored a century.

The result means Droitwich sit sixth in the Worcestershire County League Division One table.

Bartestree won the toss and elected to field as Spa openers Butler (73) and Sam Woolley (13) put on 42 runs for the opening wicket.

However, Woolley and Martyn Davies (20) fell in quick succession before Butler and Kellett (53) combined well with the bat in the middle.

The pair put on a 96-run third-wicket stand as both batters scored half-centuries with Butler scoring 19 boundaries and Kellett finding the rope on 10 occasions.

Butler eventually fell to the bowling of Ryan Trattell (1-52) while Max Backhouse (5-44) picked up the quick wickets of Adam Shaw (11) and Xavier Ariam Thuriappah (0).

Late runs from Max Young (17) and John Phillips (12) helped boost Spa’s total with Droitwich all out for 226.

Spa took a flurry of early wickets with the ball to leave Bartestree in trouble on 45-5 as Sam Smith (4-42) starred with the ball.

Smith accounted for both of Bartestree’s opening batters as George Godsall (4) and Saminda Fernando (16) fell cheaply.

And Smith then claimed the wickets of Trattell (4) and Andy Rogers (0) as the latter departed for a duck.

However, Webb (102) and Ethan Lerego (71 not out) put on a 163-run fifth-wicket stand as Bartestree took control of the match.

Both batters scored at a rate of more than a run-a-ball before Jez Hanson (2-15) eventually broke up the partnership with the wicket of Webb.

Hanson also bowled Thomas O’Connor (8) although Bartestree eased to victory with four wickets in-hand.

Droitwich are next in action against Brockhampton on Saturday, June 28 with the match to start at 12.30pm at St Peter’s Playing Fields.
