DROITWICH SPA captain Martyn Davies says he’s confident his squad has what it takes to get a good result against Colwall on Saturday despite their slow start to the season.
Spa entertain the Worcestershire League Division One leaders who have won both of their opening matches.
Spa on the other hand slumped to a nine-wicket defeat on the opening day of the season against Cookley before claiming a losing draw against Hagley last Saturday.
Despite their slow start, Davies is in high spirits and feels the squad has what it takes to get a good result.
“I think we showed more about us on Saturday than the week before so there was some positives to take,” he said.
“I knew it was going to be difficult to replicate last season’s early form but we can’t use losing the toss twice as an excuse.
“Colwall have started the season well but I’m confident that if we apply our skills on the day, we will be able to get a good result.”
Spa’s Firsts put in a spirited performance after their opening day horror show to get some points on the board with a draw at Hagley where they recovered from 43-4 on a helpful wicket for the bowlers.
A dogged fifth-wicket partnership of 40 between skipper Martyn Davies and the evergreen Paul Bryan helped the away side to post a creditable 162-8 – a total buoyed by some big-hitting from Phil Thomas, who top-scored with 37, and Craig Hunt, who smashed two sixes in the final over to reach a score of 18.
In reply, Hagley had 13 overs to fashion a result which became impossible when dangerman Joe Lennon was beautifully stumped by Jay De Costa.
Hagley finished on 80-3 to secure the winning draw with the help of Michael Stead (27) and Amjad Ali (36 not out).
There was four wickets for Jack Eaton as Droitwich Seconds collected 14 points from their winning draw against Lye.
After the visitors had scored 185-9, Spa reached 94-5 from their permitted 25 overs.
Ashley Walton also picked up four wickets as the Fourths drew their weather-spoilt clash with Barnt Green.
There was also three wickets for George Harris as the visitors made 162-8 with Droitwich reaching 108-3 in response.
This weekend, the Seconds travel to Enville and West Malvern are the opposition for both Droitwich Thirds and Fourths.
