DRESSAGE - Droitwich rider wins at National Championship

DROITWICH’S Catherine Rose and her horse Abermenai Gilbern Invader won the Petplan Equine Area Festival Novice Bronze Freestyle Championship at Arena UK in Lincolnshire.

Catherine came out on top in an extremely competitive class with a score of 71.85 per cent on nine-year-old 16.2hh Hanoverian cross Welsh section C, gelding Abermenai Gilbern Invader – known as ‘Gilbert’.

The pair were rewarded for their hard work and training by judges with the event part of the Petplan Equine Summer Area Festival Championships.

Catherine said: “I’ve loved it, I actually qualified last year for the Prelim Silver class which I really enjoyed and was very keen to have a go again this year.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever done music so it’s been the ideal place to start really. I’ve absolutely loved it.

“He’s naughty and cheeky! But a real character as I’m sure you can see, he’s so much fun to ride. I’ve had him for three and a half years, I bought him from a lady in Wales who’d had him since he was two, he hadn’t done much when I bought him.

“We do a little bit of jumping at home for training but he’s quite talented for dressage so that’s where we focus. I work in an office job for an insurance broker and I ride in my spare time.”

The Summer Championships for the Petplan Equine Area Festival series is the biggest single Championship on the British Dressage calendar with over 1,113 combinations taking part.

Petplan Equine are one of the UK’s leading horse insurance providers and this is the 23rd year they have sponsored the Area Festivals.

They aim to give grass roots riders the opportunity to experience the thrill of participating in top competition style conditions in classes from Preliminary to Intermediate II level.

Rosie Bee, Brand Marketing Executive at Petplan Equine added: “Everyone at Petplan Equine is so very proud to be associated with this much-loved competition run by British Dressage.

“It has been a great pleasure for us to watch it develop into the highly respected series it is today.

“Every year we are blown away by the dedication, perseverance and commitment shown by the competitors, most of whom work fulltime and have families but still manage to qualify and compete at the Area Festivals and for the really lucky ones the Championships.

“We know how much this competition means to all of the competitors, their supporters, and trainers.  We never get tired of hearing about their competition journeys and the highs and lows along the way.

“I am so happy to congratulate Alexzandra and Cavallina Herself on their triumph today. We wish them the very best of luck for the future.”

British Dressage Chief Executive, Jason Brautigam, said: “The Petplan Equine Area Festivals Series has delivered a fantastic experience for our members again this summer and we are delighted to see the high standard set by the very worthy qualifiers here at Arena UK.

“Following our inaugural Summer Championship for the Area Festivals in 2021, we have seen yet another increase in numbers competing, with 4,466 combinations going down the centre line, which proves this series is providing exactly what a huge proportion of our members want.

“Each year I’m in awe of the amount of effort put in by our amateur riders and their horses and ponies across all of the Area Festivals.

“Petplan Equine continue to be such a loyal supporter and sponsor of this series; we are extremely proud of this partnership and its longevity.

“Congratulations to all those who have taken part in the competition this summer and thank you to the organisers, venues, judges and volunteers who have made it happen – we couldn’t do it without you.”
