A TEENAGE Droitwich boxer is one step closer to reaching the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo after she was selected to represent England.
Sixteen-year-old Sian O’Toole, who is studying her A-levels at King Edwards in Stourbridge and is from Droitwich Amateur Boxing Academy, has been selected to join the England Talent Programme after she came through a rigorous skills and fitness assessment at Team GB’s boxing headquarters in Sheffield.
Sian was notified of her selection in the 54kg weight category by Amanda Coulson, England Boxing Women’s head coach – this coming just weeks after she became the first boxer to win a national title where she claimed victory over Ceri-Anne O’Dell in the final of the National Association of Boys and Girls Club Championship in Bristol last December.
Droitwich Amateur Boxing Academy coach Jayson Doyle, who has trained Sian over the past two years, was delighted for his fighter and said her England call-up was fully deserved.
“Sian has given her all to this point,” he said. “She trains daily, twice a day at weekends and spars twice a week too.
“Under the England Talent Programme, Sian’s excellent potential has been recognised and she will now have access to the facilities, expert coaching and support to develop her into a world-class athlete.
“She genuinely does have all the attributes to become the best in her sport and I have every confidence that she can really go to the top.”
