Droitwich Hockey Club's Ladies 2nds get first win of the season

LORNA Davidson scored four as Droitwich Spa Ladies 2nds collected their first win of the season with a 5-2 thrashing of Worcester 5ths.

But there was disappointment for Droitwich Spa Men’s 3rds who were hammered 7-0 by Redditch 3rds.

Davidson’s first came after 20 minutes as Droitwich took control of the first half, with Claire Darby and Emma Pingstone dominating the middle of the park.

Darby was the provider for Davidson’s opener and it was her free hit which set up Davidson for her second eight minutes later.

Spa upped their work rate in the second half and got their rewards as Davidson completed her hat-trick before adding another.

Worcester pulled two goals back, but this came either side of Droitwich’s fifth as they celebrated a rare success.

The result went some way to banishing the memory of the club’s Men’s 3rds’ heavy defeat and Droitwich Ladies 1sts’ gut-wrenching 3-2 loss to local rivals Kidderminster.

Despite a strong start, Droitwich, who were within their first choice keeper, were caught in defence and Kidderminster capitalised to open the scoring.

But Spa remained composed and levelled things up just before half-time when Sophie Blackmore converted some scrappy play on the goal-line.

Droitwich were reduced to ten players when Lucy Hine sustained an injury at the start of the second period and suffered a further blow when Kidderminster made it 2-1.

The hosts got back on track with a goal from Mollie Cresswell who finished off a short corner after superb play from Blackmore.

But with only minutes to go, Kidderminster snatched victory after managing to deflect a weak cross into the net.

Droitwich Spa Men’s 2nds had a better day at the office as they beat Pershore 2nds 4-2.

The home side welcomed back Steve Farr, but he was unable to stop Pershore edging ahead as the ball came off him and left Dan Adams to simple slot home at the far post.

Spa refused to sit back and soon levelled when Alex Colbourne netted with a strike from the top of the circle.

The game remained locked at 1-1 before Liam Hine gave his side the lead on the 27th minute. This was quickly followed by a goal from Tommy Ross as they opened up a 3-1 lead at half time.

Droitwich all but sealed the win when a good move involving Mike Carsbery and Hine saw Adam Jones slam the ball home.

They still managed to make a tense finish, though, as Pershore closed the gap with goal from Tom Hadley before Hine and Clifton were carded. This left Droitwich with nine men, but they clung on to clinch the win, which consolidated their position at the top of the table.
