Droitwich Ladies B secure Division Four East status with 4-0 victory over Cutnall Green

DROITWICH Ladies B secured their Herefordshire and Worcestershire Winter League Division Four East status for another year with a 4-0 victory over Cutnall Green.

The mother and daughter duo of Kate and Margaret Hughes lost only two games all day as they won 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 in both of their matches.

Caroline Brookes and Sue Webber picked up a 6-2, 6-1 victory in their first match before working hard to seal a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 victory in their next.

The Men’s A team will remain in Division One despite suffering a losing draw to local rivals Bromsgrove A.




Matt Baker and Lee Cowan were pushed to their limits but managed to grab a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 victory in their first match before a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 win in their second.

Mark Jones and James Nam lost their first match in a well fought battle 2-6, 6-3, 6-7 before losing their second 4-6, 0-6.


With the match level on matches and sets won, it was Bromsgrove who got the winning draw by 47 games to 46.

Elsewhere, the Ladies E did enough to maintain their Division Nine East status despite losing 3-1 to relegation rivals Bromsgrove F.

Hazel Briggs and Eileen Probyn-Skinner put in two hard-fought performances but unfortunately lost them both 4-6, 7-5, 5-7 and 5-7, 2-6 and respectively.

Julie Rhodes and Alison Whiteman produced an excellent display to win their first match 7-5, 6-1 before a 3-6, 3-6 loss in their second match.

In the opening Division Nine East game of the summer season, the Men’s E and F sides both played against each other in fine spirit.

Johnathan Carter and Daniel Ballard of the E team continued their fine form by picking up a 6-1, 6-2 win against Steven Whittaker and Max Rhodes followed by a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Martin Adams and David Hughes.

Adams and Hughes did manage to pick up the only victory for the F team with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 win over Mark Venables and Phil Woodhouse who responded well by beating Roger Satherthwaite and Kevin Pollard 6-2, 6-3 in their second match.

Meanwhile Richard Probyn-Skinner and Steven Good also continued their fine form from the winter season with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Satherthwaite and Pollard in their first match before a 6-1, 6-1 win in their second against Whittaker and Rhodes as the E team claimed a 5-1 win.

Finally, the Men’s B and C teams also played against each other as they kicked off their Division Four East summer campaign with some thrilling matches on show.

Joe Maidment and Ian Bowman produced two solid displays for the B team as they won both of their matches, firstly against Kevin Hodges and Bob Smith 6-0, 7-5 and secondly against Ben Steel and Neil Bates 6-2, 6-3.

Rich Clive and John Moran were also in fine form for the B’s as they came through two tight sets to beat Steel and Bates 6-4, 6-4 in their first match before a solid display to record a 6-2, 6-1 win over David Lamb and Ricky Hollander.

Lamb and Hollander did manage to win against Nick King and Eric Cartelet in their first match 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 who also lost their second match to Hodges and Smith 6-3, 2-6, 3-6 as the B team won 4-2 in a very entertaining and enjoyable encounter.
