THE DROITWICH Ladies C team kicked off their Herefordshire and Worcestershire Summer League Division Six East season in style by beating Stourport 5-1 at home.

Caroline Hawley and Angela Creese bounced back well after a 7-6, 4-6, 4-6 defeat in their first match to win their second 6-0, 6-2.

Elizabeth Fielden and Marilyn Sherring managed to grind out two victories in tight matches with a 6-7, 7-5, 6-4 win in the first and 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in their second.

Jackie Holliday and Claire Evans were in top form for Droitwich as they won 6-2, 6-4 in their first match followed by a 6-3, 6-3 win in their second.

The Ladies E team slipped to their second consecutive defeat in Division Seven East when they travelled to local rivals Bromsgrove D.

Bridget Gill and Shona Atherton came up against two strong pairs and ultimately lost both of their matches 6-7, 2-6 and 3-6, 1-6 respectively.

Chris Parry and Sue Brice also battled hard but could not manage to pick up a win, losing 1-6, 2-6 in their first match and 3-6, 4-6 in their second.

Mel Cook and Joy Baker were unlucky not to win their first match which ended 4-6, 6-2, 4-6 but responded brilliantly in their second match with a deserved 6-4, 7-6 win.

The Men’s A team got their Division One campaign off to a slow start as they suffered a 5-1 defeat to Stourbridge.

Ben Buckley played his first match for nine months following knee surgery and was unfortunate not to win his first match with partner Mark Jones as they went down in three close sets.

However, they won a three set match of their own in the second with a determined performance.

Matt Baker and Jon Sarriegui were very unlucky to lose both of their matches in three sets after pushing their opponents all the way.

James Nam and Lee Cowan lost their first match 2-6, 1-6 against a strong pair before another straight set defeat in their second saw Stourbridge seal the win.

There was also disappointment for the Men’s F team as they were beaten by Stourport C in Division Nine East.

Despite the best efforts of Steven Whittaker and Max Rhodes they lost their first match 4-6, 0-6 and their second 3-6, 3-6.

David Hughes and Paul Webber lost 0-6, 2-6 against a very strong pair in their first match before a hard fought 5-7, 3-6 defeat in their second.

Roger Satterthwaite and Roger Brown were also beaten in both of their matches 2-6, 6-7 and 0-6, 3-6 respectively as Stourport took the points.

However, there was joy for the Men’s D team as they beat Hallow C in their Division Eight East opener.

David Wicks and Ian Ross lost their first match 3-6, 2-6 before a close match in their second saw them lose 6-2, 3-6, 4-6.

James Stanford and Ricky Hollander put Droitwich back on track with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 victory followed by an excellent 6-1, 6-3 win as they leveled the scores.

Tom Trow and Josh McEvilly put in two near perfect performances as they won 6-2, 6-1 in their first and 6-0, 6-0 in their second to secure a very important win for Droitwich.

Elsewhere the Mixed E and F teams faced each other in their Division 6 East curtain-raiser.

The F team produced an excellent display to upset the odds and beat the E team 4-0.

Alexa Dean and Roger Whiteman won their first match 6-4, 6-4 against Anne Everard and Paul Webber before a 6-3, 7-5 win against Patricia Weston and Sam Reavey.

Alison Whiteman and Phil Woodhouse also grabbed two wins for the F team with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 win over Weston and Reavey followed by a 6-4, 6-2 win against Everard and Webber.
