DROITWICH pulled off their best win of the campaign and third win on the bounce when they triumphed by seven wickets at Worcestershire County League Division One title chasers Colwall.
Against a Colwall side fielding four spinners and with Droitwich skipper Martyn Davies unavailable, Spa produced an excellent all-round performance to secure victory.
Colwall began brightly and appeared to be cruising at 40 without loss in the ninth over before the game was turned on its head with three wickets going in the space of three overs.
Stand-in skipper and leg-spinner Jake Young (1-24) proved to be unplayable at times and was well supported by fellow spinner Jack Eaton (1-47), Jordan Renau (1-35) and Connor Grant (1-28) who restricted Colwall to 210-9.
In reply, Droitwich openers Max Young (77) and Ash Fearnall (47) got the innings off to the perfect start by putting on 85 for the first wicket before the latter fell in the 18th over.
After Jez Hanson (7) fell cheaply, Young was joined by veteran Paul Bryan (35 no) with the experience pair combining for a watchful but match-winning stand of 70.
When Young was finally dismissed by Mike King (1-46), Renau (19 no) continued his good form to see Spa home with four overs to spare.
Spa’s Seconds and Thirds were left ruing not posting bigger scores as they both fell to home defeats against Enville and Hallow respectively.
Despite hitting 108 off the last 14 overs, the Droitwich Seconds total of 221-3 proved easy for Enville as they cruised home by five wickets with plenty of overs to spare.
Pete Gurr hit an unbeaten 83 for the hosts and there was also a half-century for Rhys John in the Division Two Second XI clash.
The Thirds had a closer tussle against Division Five promotion chasing Hallow before going down by two wickets.
Captain James King top scored with 37 but he was one of several batsmen who was unable to convert their start into a bigger innings as Spa posted 233-9.
The visitors got off to a brisk start and although they lost wickets at regular intervals, it was Droitwich’s inability to remove Hallow’s opener captain Dave Pugh which proved vital as he saw his side home with an unbeaten knock of 99.
The Fourths suffered a 49-run defeat at Hallow, where veteran Dom Thompson bowled a miserly spell of 1-15 off nine overs in Division Five Second XI.
On Saturday, the Firsts and Seconds will be taking on their respective league leaders in the shape of Worcester Nomads and Feckenham while the Thirds and Fourths meet Old Elizabethans.
