Craig Gibbons 21st Feb, 2017

DROITWICH Mixed C played their final match of the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Winter League season on Sunday and remain top of the Division Four East table.

They produced a superb fightback away at Pershore B to claim a winning draw.

John Moran and Jackie Passey lost their first match 5-7, 5-7, as did James McKelvey and Heather Fellows by a scoreline of 5-7, 4-6 to leave Droitwich 2-0 down at the halfway stage.

However, Moran and Passey won their second match 6-4, 6-3 before McKelvey and Fellows won theirs 6-4, 6-0 as the visitors got the wining draw by 43 games to 38.

The Ladies F slipped to the foot of Division Ten East after suffering a 3-1 defeat to local rivals Bromsgrove G.

Janine Billinge and Sue Bryce gave their all but lost both of their match 4-6, 2-6 and 1-6, 2-6 respectively.

Shona Atherton and Bridget Gill were unlucky to lose their first match 3-6, 7-6, 1-6 before performing admirably to win their second 6-1, 6-1.

Relegation for the Men’s C team is all but confirmed as they suffered a losing draw at home to Cookley in Division Five East.

Neil Bates and Ben Steel played some fine tennis tow in 6-3, 6-3 in their first match before losing the second 1-6, 4-6.

Makr Pearsall and Bob Smith lost the first game 2-6, 2-6 but responded well with a solid 6-3, 7-6 success in their second.

However, it was not enough to claim the win as Cookley won 39-34 on games.

In an incredibly close match against Ombersley C in Division Eight East, the Mixed F team unfortunately lost 3-1.

Husband and wife duo Roger and Alison Whiteman fought to the very end in both of their matches but lost 2-6, 7-6, 0-6 and 1-6, 6-4, 5-7 respectively.

Alexa Dean and David Watts won their first match in another three setter 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 before losing the second 3-6, 2-6.
