Droitwich Mixed D earn winning draw in summer season curtain-raiser

DROITWICH Mixed D begun their Herefordshire and Worcestershire Division Five West campaign with a hard-fought winning draw at home to David Lloyd Worcester B.

In a marathon three-set match, Mark Venables and Christina Sellers lost their first match 6-4, 5-7, 4-6 before responding well with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 win in their second.

Ian Ross and Liz French picked up a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 win in their first clash and despite losing the second 6-1, 3-6, 4-6, they did enough to get the winning draw.

The Men’s C played their second Division Four East game of the campaign but lost 5-1 at home to Stourbridge D.




Peter Fawcus and James McKelvey lost their first match 3-6, 5-7 before picking up the only win for Droitwich in their second match 7-6, 6-4.

Ben Steel and Mark Pearsall lost their first match 2-6, 6-7 before a 2-6, 3-6 loss in their second match.


Dave Lamb and Dave Wicks lost their opening rubber 4-6, 2-6 and their second 2-6, 1-6 as Stourbridge sealed the victory.

Following their impressive victory against David Lloyd Bromsgrove C last weekend, the Ladies D team could not follow it up as they lost 4-2 to Bromsgrove D in Division Seven East.

Despite the best efforts of Jackie Holliday and Abigail Moore, they lost both of their matches 1-6, 2-6 and 3-6, 1-6 respectively.

Alison Whiteman and Julie Rhodes lost their first match 5-7, 2-6 before picking up a 6-4, 6-2 win in their second.

Alexa Dean and Julia Rollit were involved in two tight matches, winning the first 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 but lost the next 6-7, 6-3, 6-7.

The Mixed F team were comprehensively beaten 4-0 by Halesowen in Division Six East.

Steve Good and Shona Atherton lost their first match 1-6, 2-6 and their second 1-6, 3-6.

Joy Baker and Phil Woodhouse did come close to getting a win in their first match but lost 6-3, 3-6, 6-7 before suffering a 4-6, 3-6 loss in their second.

The Mixed C got their Division Five East campaign off to a good start with a winning draw over David Lloyd Dudley B.

Husband and wife due Chris and Jackie Passey put in two good performances but were still beaten in their matches 5-7, 7-6, 0-6 and 6-3, 6-7, 1-6 respectively.

However, Dave Lamb and Karen Hay put in two excellent displays to win 6-4, 7-6 and 7-6, 6-0 to seal the winning draw on sets.

It was a bad day at the office for the Men’s F squad as they lost 6-0 away to Fladbury in Division Nine East.

Roger Whiteman and David Hughes lost both their contests 1-6, 1-6 and their second 0-6, 3-6.

Roger Satterthwaite and Mark Alexander also lost their first match in two tight sets 3-6, 4-6 before a 4-6, 0-6 loss in their second.

Steve Whittaker and Max Rhodes also struggled against solid opponents, losing both of their matches by the same scoreline of 1-6, 6-3 as Fladbury took all the points.

The Ladies B team managed to secure a winning draw against Halesowen in Division Three.

Lydia Walker-Cox and Linda Price suffered a 6-7, 6-3, 3-6 defeat in their first match followed by a 3-6, 3-6 loss in their second.

Sue Webber and Heather Fellows won their first match in a tight affair 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 but did not have anything left in the tank for their second match, losing 5-7 2-6.

But the mother and daughter duo of Margaret and Kate Hughes shined yet again for Droitwich as their crucial 6-2, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-0 respective victories secured the win on games.

The Mixed A side moved to the summit of Division Two with victory over local rivals David Lloyd Bromsgrove B.

Joe Maidment and Marelize Yorke produced two top quality performances to win their contests 7-6, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-4 respectively.

Mark Jones and Lisa Pettener-Jones were equally as impressive in their matches, winning both of them by the same scoreline of 6-3, 6-2.

In the youth leagues, Droitwich’s under-eights produced a performance of the highest quality to beat Redditch 15-1 in Mixed Division Two Group B.

Jacob Dufty, Harry Smart, Oliver Stevens and Lewis Hunt all played excellently in the various matches to seal the win, moving Droitwich into second place in the table.

The under-tens also produced brilliant tennis to beat Barnt Green 6-0 in Mixed Division Two with solid wins for Harry Waters, Jack Fletcher, Joel Park and Holly Stevens.

Finally, the under-14 boys got back to winning ways against Worcester in Division Two Group B.

James Stanford showed his explosive hitting with a 6-0, 6-0 singles win as Thomas Dobson showed determination to fight back and win 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 in his singles match.

The two combined well in their doubles to win 6-1, 6-0 and secure a 3-0 win.
