DROITWICH Dolphins enjoyed a successful 2016 Welsh Masters Championships as a quartet of swimmers walked away with six medals.

Chris Jenkinson, Dan Kay, Sean Storey and Stephen Wells made the trip to Swansea for the annual championships held in Olympic sized pools (50m).

All four have represented Worcestershire County and there was immediate success for Kay who claimed a third place finish in the 200m Individual Medley, while Storey finished in fifth.

This was quickly followed up with two more medals in the Men’s 50m Breaststroke, with Jenkinson claiming a club record and personal best time of 31.60s to claim silver, while Storey finished third and Well in sixth.

Jenkinson then went on to finish third over in the Men’s 100m Breaststroke, narrowly missing out by tenths on further improving his own club record.

Storey achieved a new long course personal best in the Men’s 50m Butterfly while Kay and Wells finished seventh and eighth respectively.

The quarter then combined their efforts in the Men’s 200m Medley Relay to finish third, narrowly missing out on silver as Swansea Aquatics pipped Droitwich to the touch.

The team’s last individual event of the day saw Jenkinson take gold in his age group with victory in the 200m Butterfly, setting another new long course personal best and club record in the process.

As Jenkinson’s times were well within the qualifying standard required to compete for Great Britain in the 2016 European Masters Swimming Championships taking place in the Olympic pool at the London Aquatics Centre in May, he will now be focusing his training specifically on the two events he will be competing in; the 50m and 100m Breastroke.

Head coach Chris Hadley said: “I am really pleased to have seen the four lads get some success.

“We have got a strong Masters team and at the moment, Droitwich Dolphins seems to be getting a lot of success.

“It’s fantastic that Chris has reached the European Masters, it just shows that with hard work, you can get the success.

“To be able to qualify for such a tournament means a lot, not just for me, but Chris too.”
