Droitwich Rugby Club plan to experiment for visit of Woodrush

DROITWICH director of rugby Adam Drew plans to use this weekend’s home league clash as an opportunity to test some of the players currently out of the first team picture.

Despite not being at their fluent best, Spa made it through to the Midlands Senior Vase final last weekend after beating Northampton Casuals 30-20 to move within tow matches of what would be a memorable trip to Twickenham.

Drew’s men will face Evesham later this season in the Midlands final, which is equivalently the National Vase quarter-final.

But Droitwich return to league action in Midlands Three West (South) tomorrow (Saturday) at home to league strugglers Woodrush.

On paper it’s a match which league leaders Droitwich should win given they are playing a side second from bottom who have only won two league games out of 12 games this season.

Spa have won all of their 12 league games and know two or three more wins over the coming months will see them make an immediate return to Midlands Two West (South).

And Drew told the Standard he will be using the fixture to give other players a run out to see how they perform under pressure.

“We have decided to mix the side up for Saturday’s game just to try some fringe players,” he said

“It’s important I develop the squad and make it stronger than what it is and we are hoping to get the win. We are not taking Woodrush lightly at all. It is not a case of us being weaker, it’s just that we need to look at more players.

“When you do have players unavailable then these players will need to step up, so it is vital we take a look at them to see what they can do.”

Rob Poke scored two tries for Droitwich in Northampton with Aaron Middleton and Sam O’Brien also diving over for the visitors.

Bobby Scott-Walker added 10 points with his boot against a side who lie fourth in Midlands Three East (South).
