TWO of Droitwich Spa’s young national boxing champions have been showcasing their talents in international competitions.
ABA Youth National winner Sian O’Toole travelled to Bulgaria to represent England in the European Championships.
The 18-year-old was unlucky to have been drawn against reigning and two-time champion Sadiku Donjeta from Kosovo.
However, the Spa fighter certainly was not overawed by her more experienced opponent and produced an excellent performance only to lose the three-round contest on points.
Meanwhile, 14-year-old Joe Doyle, the national junior title holder at 40kg, returned to the Monkstown International Box Cup in Ireland where he won gold last year and seemed destined to secure another.
His reputation saw him go straight through to the final where he delivered another polished display against Robert Dunn from Sunderland’s Hendon Boxing Club.
But Joe missed out on the title after losing on points, a decision which baffled his coaching team and the crowd in Dublin.
Jayson Doyle, Joe’s father and coach at Droitwich Amateur Boxing Academy, said: “Both Sian and Joe have enjoyed fantastic seasons and these were the fights which have not gone their way after nine and ten bouts respectively.
“Neither of them should be disappointed.
“Sian, who is now under contract at GB Boxing, gained much from her experience in Bulgaria and is now aiming for selection for the World Championships in India in September.
“While we thought Joe had done more than enough to win in Ireland, he can be proud of a successful season which has brought him the National Championship.
“He now has England training camps to look forward to over the summer as he prepares to move up two weight categories.”
